Session Descriptions

X-Ray: What’s Your Superpower?

Presenter: Ashley Marshall

Imaging sciences fuses technology with anatomy and health care in a dynamic environment that allows you the opportunity to not only develop as a professional but also to become an important member of the health care team. The unique degree paths offered in imaging sciences allow students the chance to complete degrees in a variety of imaging specialties. The radiologic and imaging science degree programs develop highly trained imaging professionals and can also act as a building block toward advanced degrees in imaging science modalities or could become a stepping stone toward many of the other advanced health care degrees offered at IUPUI.

Hands-On Basic Nursing Skills

Who Runs the Hospital? Careers in Health Administration

Presenter: Sarah Johnson

So much goes into providing quality care to patients, and it doesn’t all happen in the exam room. Nurse managers, chief medical officers, unit directors, chief executive officers, and others play an important role in making sure health care is delivered to all who need it. These health services managers are the planners, directors, and coordinators who work behind the scenes and on the frontlines to keep hospitals, nursing homes, doctor’s offices, and other health care facilities running efficiently. If you are thinking about a career in health care, consider the world of health care administration.

What Can You Do with a Public Health Degree?

From hunting and eliminating ancient and deadly diseases like smallpox to preventing cancer in your hometown, public health professionals care for entire populations. With a public health degree, our graduates become disease detectives, they help entire communities live healthier lives, and they prevent toxic exposures and injuries where people live, work, and play. Public health graduates have a wide variety of job opportunities with just a bachelor's degree—as consultants, in private industry, in government agencies, in health care, and at nonprofits. And with our pre-professional degree options, some go on to become physicians, veterinarians, and other health care providers. Learn about the good work you will do by earning a Bachelor of Science in public health at the Fairbanks School of Public Health.

Saving Lives Once Cell at a Time

Do you have an interest in health care and science? Clinical laboratory science and cytotechnology are both undergraduate B.S. majors offered through the Health Professions Programs within the IU School of Medicine. These majors sit at the intersection of cutting edge science, technology, and health care. Graduates have excellent employment opportunities after successfully passing their respective certification exams. In addition, many graduates continue their education by attending graduate and professional degree programs. Attend this informational session about these challenging and fast-paced degree programs.

Nursing Job Opportunities

The Urban Clinic and Community Nursing

Presenter: Julie Moore

The presentation will discuss an innovative role for nursing students within a student-run free clinic. Student nurses serve as patient navigators, educators, care coordinators, health coaches, and advocates. They conduct generalized health screenings, perform assessments, and plan treatment for patients in an interprofessional team that includes students from medicine, pharmacy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, ophthalmology, dentistry, social work, and law.

What Is Health Data Science?

Presenter: Spencer Lourens

How well do you know the world you live in? Do you know which countries have the highest population? How about the highest (or lowest) standards of living? Is there evidence that alcohol consumption may (or may not) be related to lung cancer? Does UC Berkeley discriminate against females in their admissions decisions? These are all questions that we can answer in an interactive fashion using health data science methods. Join us in a highly interactive session where you will answer questions from your smart phone and learn how data can literally CONFOUND us!

Radiating Positive Energy

Presenter: Maria Walker

Radiating positive energy is a synopsis of the discipline of radiation oncology and the Radiation Therapy Program at Indiana University School of Medicine. At the completion of the presentation, the audience will be able to:

  • Define radiation oncology
  • Understand a cancer diagnosis

Epidemiology: Because the World Needs Answers

Epidemiology is the basic science of public health and finds patterns in populations to solve complex health problems. Epidemiologists are disease detectives, discovering the causes of disease among populations. Every day, epidemiologists battle the diseases that make us sick, from investigating and controlling infectious disease outbreaks to controlling and preventing chronic diseases. Epidemiology is one of the STEM disciplines in public health.
